The Big Red Kidney Walk is a benefit event held in September with the objective of spreading awareness and raising funds for the 1.7 million Australians who have kidney disease.
The series of walks take place in several cities throughout the country, with flagship events held in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, and Brisbane as well as smaller events in Mount Gambier and other cities.
Big Red Kidney Walk Mount Gambier 2020 Dates, Entry Prices & Schedule
The registration fees are used to cover the cost of producing the events; all registration fees are inclusive of entry to the walk, a chance to win incentives, and a fundraising page so that all who join can help raise more funds. After registration, you’ll get a confirmation email along with a receipt of payment.
The scenic walk starts at 10am through 1pm at the Railway Lands, Bay Road & Wehl Streets in Mount Gambier. Participants walk along the path toward Bay Road, past the rail sculpture and ending near the amphitheatre, before it repeats (for those doing more than one lap).
The walk is wheelchair friendly, and pets are welcome too. Participants can choose from varying course distances: 1.2km, 2.4km, or 3.6km with 1-3 laps. Comfortable closed-toe walking shoes and a red outfit are highly recommended; prizes will be awarded to best-dressed individuals and groups – even dressed up pooches too!
The Big Red Kidney Walk is open to everyone of all ages, with several activities planned for spectators as well. Kids below the age of 18 are recommended to bring an adult along for an exciting raffle with awesome prizes, coffee, and snacks. The walks are not competitive, so there will be no timing.
All locations provide limited parking; participants and supporters are encouraged to use public transportation or carpool. In case of rain, there is a wet weather plan for the event so that it will go on rain, hail or shine, except for unsafe or extreme weather conditions. A first aid team will be available at the event village.
Individuals who are interested in supporting the Big Red Kidney Walk charities but who can’t participate in the walk can also help in other ways. Many choose to organise their walk with colleagues or friends on another day or pledge donations when possible.
