Wehl’s Mount Benson Vineyards is set in one of the most picturesque areas in the Mount Benson wine region. As the first vineyard ever in the region, it is easy to see why it is a preferred destination for wine connoisseurs.

Founded in 1989 by Peter and Leah Wehl, the vineyards are home to some of the country’s finest wines. The vineyards are located just a few kilometres from the Southern Ocean, so it’s no surprise that being so close to the sea has had a positive impact on the quality of these wines.

During its formative years, the Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were sold to suppliers. Today, the Wehl’s retains some of the grapes for the purpose of winemaking under their specific brands. Additionally, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc grapes have been added to the vineyard to create a more diverse palate for the wine connoisseur. The result is a selection of red wines packed with tannins but whose elegance and premium quality have carved a niche for Wehls Mount Benson Vineyards in the wine market.

Some of the popular wines include the Wehl’s Mount Benson Shiraz 2007, a wine whose dense tannins and rich liquorice notes are perfect for wine lovers looking for a medium to full-bodied wine. Enjoy the spicy cassis and violet notes of the Wehl’s Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2007 or opt for the savoury Cabernet Sauvignon.

Make celebrations more special with the flavour-loaded unwooded chardonnay of 2009. With pineapple and melon notes followed by a crisp mineral finish, this variety will definitely make any occasion exceptional.

Other wines that you can look out for include the 2002 Shiraz, the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, as well as the 2006 Sauvignon Blanc. Remember to visit the cellar door, a tiny modest room filled to the brim with excellent wine.

Wehl’s Mount Benson Vineyards is accessible using Wrights Bay Road, Mount Benson in Kingston. The cellar door is open daily between 10am and 4pm, making it a perfect location for an easy weekend away.
