Mount Gambier Crater Lakes Walking Tracks & Mountain Bike Trails

A number of tourists head to the Blue Lake in November/December to see its natural turquoise blue coloured water. The phenomenon of the changing water colour of Blue Lake from an intense turquoise blue to a sombre blue involves a number of theories. The most popular theory is that the change in colour correlates to the change of water temperature within the lake.

Visitors can also enjoy an amazing view of the Valley Crater Lake while exploring all of the Mount Gambier Crater Lakes. Apart from the many scenic attractions, the Valley Crater Lake boasts a beautiful wildlife park, adventure playground, separate children’s play area, picnic grounds, outdoor BBQs and shelters. With so many facilities, families often come here to enjoy an outdoor party or picnic with their loved ones.

The area also offers an abundance of walking trails, excellent lookouts and numerous picturesque viewpoints perfect for nature photographers and visitors.

While visiting the area of Browne’s Lake and the Leg of Mutton, enjoy the scenic walks which will take you past some of the star attractions including; the Blue Lake Circuit, Pepperport trail and the Mountain trail. • What walks around Mt. Gambier would be suitable for a retired married couple in their 70’s. The husband & wife class themselves as fit. They live in Cheltenham, Vic. and will be in Mt. Gambier for 2 weeks.

    • Hi Kelly,

I would recommend the Blue Lake Circuit which is a distance of 3.6kms (circuit) which will take around 1 hour to complete. The terrain is flat and the walk would be considered easy/moderate.

Another nice walk is Mount Gambier Rail Trail which is 5.4kms one way and takes between 1.5-2 hours to complete. Terrain is flat and this one will take you through the heart of Mount Gambier.

A third option is the Rook Walk/Pepperpot Trail. The distance is a 1.7 km circuit which takes 1 hour to complete. This walk is moderate as the terrain is undulating with a moderate difficulty.

      Best regards,
      Jess
