Out of the fossils present within the caves, the Fossil Chamber of the Victoria Fossil Cave is the one which is most extensively studied. The fossil present in the chamber of this cave provides the snapshot of the ancient time when animals used to live here.

The Naracoorte caves are located at Naracoorte Caves National Park, which is South Australia’s only World Heritage Site. This site was recognized as World Heritage Site in 1994 because of the fossils found in these caves.

A guided tour is best way to explore the Fossil Cave. The tour will take you through the several chambers of the cave. On your way to the Fossil Chamber, you will learn about the accumulation of the bones in caves, the research being done within the cave, the world heritage status of the cave, as well as the excavation techniques used to extract the fossils. You can also analyse the complete skeletons of the ancient animal species.

The tour is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, but as it involves about half an hour sitting in the Fossil Chamber, it may not be particularly suitable for young children. There are about 50 steps to enter the cave and a sloping path to exit it. The tour will take about one hour to complete. If you are in Naracoorte, don’t miss the chance to see this stunning cave.
